How do you define perfection?
MG: Man I don’t know what perfection is in one succinct sense but I know that it is found in getting lost. Getting lost in a song that makes you sing out loud to yourself. Getting carried away when you are working on a project that you kind of just found the groove to and you are in a creative storm. Demolishing a plate of food that has all of the right stuff.. You know? Losing yourself in something you know you have found perfection.
What are you most proud of?
MG: MY PEOPLE. I truly believe that these people in my life are all here by design. I can name at least 30 people that I would call my soul pack. They re all so different from one another and offer so many different perspectives. If I judge the success of my life off of the quality of my family and friends I think I have crushed it! These folks to color my days here on earth are some mighty fine ones!
What advice would you give to your younger self or a young girl today?
MG: Someone I met last week just said that women are trying so hard to “lean in” and be at the table that they are falling on their faces! I wholeheartedly agree with this. I would tell my younger self and other young ladies; just because you can doesn’t mean you should! For years I tried to hard to squeeze myself into work roles that were a terrible fit for what my soul wanted and for that matter what I cared to be working on getting better at. Why was I a B+ manager? Because I hate telling people what to do. Why am I a successful photographer? Because I love the hard parts of the job- talking to strangers- finding new clients- searching for new inspiration. I should have known much earlier to trust my creative instinct and not be fearful to follow my own path of success.
What do you love about yourself?
MG: I like that I don’t think about things too much. That I just kind of trust the process and go down roads that I have no clue where they go. I think that has found me in some amazing places and introduced me to some remarkably weird and awesome people!
