    Freda Girl

MEET OUR ROLE MODELS: WEEK 4

    How do you define perfection?
JL: Perfection..it’s a moment. It’s a feeling. The perfect kiss, the perfect cup of coffee, conversation, sunrise. Perfection is created in the now…nothing else.

What are you most proud of?
JL: Well everyone probably expects me to say my two beautiful sons. But it’s not that– I wanted to become a mom. But it was already in me. My business was my first baby and I’m proud of me trusting my gut and believing in my vision and mission! My success is that I listen to ME. That’s what I’m most proud of!

What advice would you give to your younger self or a young girl today?

JL: Trust your freaking gut! Trust that being different takes you places that you CAN dream of. But work hard, do your hustle and own it! I never wanted to stand out from the crowd, and wanted to be like everyone else but it always backfired! I just had to be me.

What do you love about yourself?

JL: Physically, I love my lips and cheeks. I love the movement of me. And my inner glow. Yes, I’m 46 years old, yes I have lines, yes I’m getting older. But I own it. Mentally, I love my inner wise warrior woman. Always getting me back on track, giving me clarity.

    How do you define perfection?
AR: Finding pleasure and pockets of excitement in the everyday, feeling connected to those around you and where you are.

What are you most proud of?
AR: A few things. I’m proud to be in a position where I’m channeling my unique skills and expertise to make an impact in the Black community, both professionally in my job at /dev/color and personally in showcasing Black fashion designers and artists. I’m proud of how much I’ve grown (and continue to grow!). Emotionally and mentally, as a Black woman occupying spaces where there aren’t a lot of folks who look like me.

What advice would you give to your younger self or a young girl today?
    AR: Be unapologetically you.
What do you love about yourself?
AR: My inner strength, thoughtfulness, curiosity, compassion, and self-expression.
