You may recognize our next #FREDAGirl, internationally acclaimed artist, Clare Rojas, from our footwear collaboration last summer. Known for her geometric narratives, Rojas’ work is both bold and understated and her style perfectly captures our FREDA Girl. We caught up with her at her studio to find out what is inspiring her these days. Find out what she had to say…
Tell us a bit about your career. How did you get to where you are?
I am a painter and a musician. I am not sure where I am, but I am so grateful for every opportunity I have been afforded to work really really hard at what I love to do.
Is there a certain period in your life that has influenced your work? Or is it always changing?
My life is my work, so everything is a constant influence, for better or worse.
What milestones in your career are you most proud of and what do you still hope to accomplish?
I am most proud of having a studio to call all my own. This is a huge and extremely important milestone for any artist.
What’s your perfect day in the studio look like? What do you listen to/wear and what do you accomplish?
My perfect day is reading a book with a cup of coffee to get my mind straight, a book with characters that float in and out of my head all day, going to my studio to paint without having to be on my phone. I get to finish a thought, a composition, or layers of color to my liking, and I don’t have to leave the studio before then. this is often an unfulfilled fantasy. I wear jeans and a t-shirt/ sweatshirt, I have to get on the floor a lot and paint, so non-precious is the way to go for me. sometimes I get a little bored and try to wear something nice and without fail get paint all over it.
Where do you find inspiration as an artist and creative person? What is inspiring you these days?
I find inspiration everywhere, but my garden and the flowers with colors I can’t believe are real is number one on my list these days.
Life motto or words to live by?
“treat others how you would like to be treated”
